FREE Avalanche Fundamentals course

Thinking of exploring the mountains more this winter? Whether hiking the Ridge at Bridger Bowl, skiing Schlasman's, snowmobiling in Cooke City, or venturing into the backcountry, learning about avalanche safety is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Park County Environmental Council is partnering with the Friends of the Gallitan National Forest Avalanche Center to offer a FREE Avalanche Fundamentals course in Park County, perfect for beginners, those looking for a refresher, and anyone interested in learning more about mountain safety. This two-part course will cover essential topics like:

  • Beacon Use: Learn how to properly use an avalanche transceiver (beacon) for searching and rescue.

  • Avalanche Terrain Recognition: Understand the types of terrain where avalanches occur.

  • Avalanche Conditions: Learn about the weather and snowpack factors that contribute to avalanche formation.

  • Companion Rescue: Practice the techniques needed to find and dig out someone buried in an avalanche.

Free Two-Part Course:

  • Part One: Wednesday, February 5th, in person community lecture at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Park High School (Room C-9).

  • Part Two: Sunday, February 9th, field session will be held at 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Snowbank Campground in Mill Creek.
